I'm not the only one who does this, but when walking down the street, or on the subway - I look at strangers in their eyes. I like to see who I can connect with, even for a split second. I call it the prolonged eye contact game. It can often tread the line of entertaining and creepy. At least for me, anyway. But then again, it's only creepy if I say it's creepy, right?
Even if I've got music on in my ears, I'm very much aware of my surroundings. And this is partly because I'm a female, and by default I've got to be on guard for "big scary attackers". Yes, they do exists. I'm just also hyper aware; I need to feel that connection with people. Eye contact or not, I ask myself: What are they thinking? What are they feeling? And then they look up, and our eyes meet - and BOOM. There's a connection.
What is that?
Is it God (read: Uni-Verse, Divine, Higher Power) showing up? Is that our souls speaking to each other? Is it acknowledgment that... "I see you"? Henry David Thoreau once said, "The eye is the jewel of the body."
I'm not sure what the meaning is, but I do know that it's precious and valuable.
When I'm feeling extra brave, I go as far as showing my SMILE to a stranger. Smiling at a stranger is probably one of the most stimulating things ever. My endorphins throw a party in my body!
Notice the people in the world around you. You will see yourself.
