I shared multiple rooms with a few different friends in order to get by. I had fellow Angelinos who would curse my name when I revealed how little I was paying monthly, Although the ability to make my rent with ease was a great benefit, what was lacking was a space to call my own. I was constantly considering my bunk-mate when it came to any decision made in our shared room. It was rare that I could shut the door to the world and spend time with myself. It always seemed like that's when he needed something from the closet or nightstand...
When my big promotion came around last September, I saw an opportunity to move up in the renter's world. I ventured out on my own and moved in with a new friend the first of this month. Not only did I upgrade the neighborhood I am residing in, but I also cut down the amount of roomies by 50%. I live in a spacious 2 bed/1 bath down the road from my old place. The best part? I have my OWN ROOM!
It's mine -- all mine! Building my bed and arranging my belongings on the closet shelves last week was too much fun for a task like that.
What I see out of having my own space again is the freedom to unwind, the pleasure to get creative and the opportunity to restore and center my energy. It may seem trivial to some, but for you out there reading this who could not imagine a world where you didn't have your own room...I now get it. Here's to being able to talk in your sleep and press the snooze button just one more time.
