I wanted this bully to leave her alone, but she was responsible for the damn bullying! If Sally’s boyfriend or boss degraded her, she would drop-kick them! If I told her that I was a pathetic failure, she would drop-kick me! Like I said, she is extremely resilient, except when it comes to herself.
So why do we abuse the one person we need to love the most? Why do wear blinders when it comes to ourselves? We’re all guilty of “being our own worst enemy” and “hard on ourselves”, but it’s time to STOP. No one significant is keeping score and when you are 80, you won’t care.
The next time you criticize yourself about ANYTHING (that late-night pint of ice cream, the so-so presentation you gave, a 2nd date that never materialized), STOP and ask yourself:
What loving words of encouragement would I give my friend or my own daughter in that situation?
Then practice what you preach.
From this day forth, promise to look at yourself with gentler eyes and a compassionate heart. Give yourself the same pep talk and respect that you give loved ones. And most importantly, be YOUR GREATEST ALLY!
